The German government has defined the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 to 95% by 2050 compared with 1990 levels. In Germany, more than three quarters of the final energy demand is caused by the heating and transport sectors. The success of the energy system transformation is therefore increasingly dependent on the interplay between the electricity, heat and mobility sectors. In order to optimally integrate and use renewable energies in the existing energy system, an holistic view of the electricity, gas, and heat networks is required.

E.ON SE has commissioned the project "C07 – Zukünftige Energieinfrastruktur in Deutschland", to investigate how an economically optimal regional coupling of the sectors in Germany in a decarbonized energy world and the resulting investment requirements in infrastructures for the transport of electricity, gas, and heat will look like. In a first step, the future energy supply will be derived by the compilation of atlases regarding the demands for useful energy and the future electricity supply as well as the consideration of the development of sector coupling technologies in a scenario framework. Based on this, the second step is the development and application of a linear optimization model to determine the optimal overall economic energy infrastructure development in Germany with sector coupling. Finally, the investment requirements of the distribution network infrastructures for selected regions will be determined with the help of a model developed for this project.

In this project, the FCN scientists are investigating, among other things, the dissemination potentials of different technologies (such as heat pumps and electric vehicles) by means of diffusion modelling and are developing the useful energy and supply atlases.
