Optimized Predictive Performance Using Cyber Physical Systems (OPUS)

An early detection of impending failures of components in the fields of mechanical engineering or the electricity and utilities industry is nowadays still uncommon, as the relevant subsystems are often not (yet) connected and available data are not (yet) analyzed adequately. Due to the lack of information the failure of these so-called cyber-physical systems can lead to
- a stop of the entire operation process and
- a resource-intensive maintenance process.
This can lead to high costs especially for large industrial plants, public institutions (e.g. schools, universities, and administrations), large building complexes as well as critical infrastructures (e.g. power plants, waterworks, sewage plants).
FCN is investigating the economic benefits of predictive maintenance concepts with models developed at the institute. FCN has already conducted several studies investigating innovative maintenance strategies and compared them with classical maintenance strategies (among others for photovoltaic and wind power plants). Additionally, possible business models that make use of the predictive maintenance concept are being developed.
